Canada’s Carbon Atlas

Where emissions come from—and how they change.

Geographic context · Natural Earth

Behind the atlas

Sources & appearance

Canada’s national inventory

Annual greenhouse gas emissions, excluding land use, land-use change and forestry. One megatonne (Mt) is one million tonnes. CO₂e puts greenhouse gases on a common equivalent basis.

Reporting facilities

A separate reporting population, not the whole economy. The facility view uses ECCC’s published 2024 facility snapshot, retrieved 30 September 2026. Values are in kilotonnes of CO₂e (kt), while national totals are in megatonnes (Mt). Facilities without usable coordinates remain in the list. Earlier facility years are not loaded. These values must not be added to national totals.

Weather

Current modelled conditions at provincial and territorial capitals, refreshed every 30 minutes while enabled. UTC timestamps refer to the provider’s weather data, independent of the selected emissions year. No device location is used.

Map & atmosphere

Province and surrounding country boundaries use Natural Earth’s public-domain 1:50m datasets in a Lambert conformal conic projection. Surrounding countries provide context and cannot be selected. Satellite-derived land cover and shaded relief use Natural Earth I, reprojected to align with the boundaries and tinted sage. This is a static reference map, not live satellite imagery or current snow coverage. Land tint is geographic context, not an emissions scale. Atmospheric texture is decorative.

Local table snapshot retrieved 30 September 2026. Published figures are rounded, so component sums may differ from totals. Province totals are available for 1990, 2005 and 2024; national totals and sectors cover 1990–2024. Changes are calculated from these rounded figures.
